Goodbye to our salmon friends! We successfully released 97 wild salmon back into their home watershed, where in several weeks they will head down river to the mouth of the river where they will fatten up, and get used to the salt water. Then, in a month or more, with millions of others, they will soon migrate out of Burrard Inlet to spend the next 4 years in the open Pacific Ocean. Just think, thanks to our efforts, 4 years from now when our students are in Grades 9 and 10, those same salmon will return at the end of their lives to spawn in our rivers and perpetuate the life cycle!

Reminder: It is a District-wide Professional Day on Monday. Students do not attend school.

Homework:

Math:
Gr. 6:  Triangle sheet handout (T)
Gr. 5:  p. 250 # 1-4
(Gr 5s will have a test on this chapter in Geometry when we finish with p. 250/251)

If Grade 5s need dot paper (triangular or square), they can download and print this 2-page doc here:

Oh, we've enjoyed this novel! Roland Smith's "Thunder Cave" is a rollicking great read, and we only have about 40 pages left. So exciting.

Reminder:
Next week we release the salmon on Tuesday afternoon. I still haven't received permission from all parents, and I am also asking for help with driving if you have the time.

Social Studies test next week for Grade 6s.
Grade 6 students should be studying for an upcoming test next week. Students need to be prepared to show what they know about the content from pp. 68-88 in the text book.

Grade 5s need to know about the 5 forms of energy used in Canada (p. 137 in the Gr. 5 text).
Also, read "The Trade in Fur" p. 140/141.

Any student who is late handing in their descriptive writing should have that for me first thing Monday morning.

Math:
Gr. 5: Complete the drawings (p. 248 # 1) (M)
Gr. 6: Complete the most recent triangles handout page (M).

Science "good copy" write-ups are due as soon as possible. Data in table format should be done on the computer, not by hand with a pencil. Sketches with colour and labels can be done by hand to augment the "Procedures" section if so desired.

Salmon Release coming up next week!

Look for a permission form to come home today, like the one below, to allow your child to join us at a nearby creek as we release our salmon next Tuesday afternoon.

Can you help drive students to/from? We are relying on parent volunteer drivers for this 2-hour field trip, so if you have the time and the inclination to help drive, that would be very much appreciated.

If your child didn't bring home their copy of the permission letter, you can print a copy off from here. There is no cost to this field trip.

Homework:

Social Studies:
Gr. 5:  Read p. 137 and research 1 energy form (we talked about 5: oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear power, electricity; students are to pick just one to research), and complete the questions on p. 138  of the Social text (F)
Gr. 6:  read p. 86-87  of the Socials Text, and sketch, colour, and label the water cycle (p. 88) (F)

Science:
Students should be finishing up their science experiment good copy and handing it in for marking by the end of this week at the latest.

Students have been given the opportunity to hand in a rough draft to me if they so wish to get help to ensure they do well on this assignment.

Writing:
Descriptive writing (a paragraph or two of non-fiction, description. Could be a family pet dog, a secret hideout in the attic, or an afternoon gliding along the shoreline in a kayak) (W)

Track & Field

Track and Field is well underway with Brooksbank entering the 2nd week of practices. There is something going on almost every day of the week! In the same vein, all Intermediate students, including our class of course, rotate once during class time through each of 6 events for exposure to the nuances of the sport: they experience shot put, high jump, relays, sprints, distance running, and long jump. This afternoon we completed the second of three rotations, with the final session happening tomorrow. All students from Grades 4-7 are invited to take part. It isn't too late to join! Forms for participants are available from Mr. Kelly, our Vice Principal.
